In Sunday night's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the HBO program host enlisted the aid of Bill Nye the Science Guy. Nye—who holds a degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell—is best known for teaching children the basics of science on his Emmy winning television show.

But his appearance on HBO Sunday was strictly for the adults. Oliver asked Nye to explain carbon pricing as it relates to climate change and global warming.

In a new video, science educator Bill Nye expressed his frustration over “science illiteracy” and the mistrust of science in the United States, particularly with our nation’s leadership. He contrasted the frantic response to Ebola epidemic to the shrugged shoulders that climate change so often receives.

“People aren’t afraid of dying as much as they’re afraid of how they’re going to die,” he said, “and the ebola death looks horrible… and what’s making it worse––in Africa in particular––is scientific illiteracy, people not realizing that these microorganisms can pass from one to another… By having a population of people who don’t understand germs and how serious they are, a germ gets spread really readily.”

Stephen Hawking says he cannot explain Donald Trump’s popularity, calling the presumptive Republican presidential nominee “a demagogue who seems to appeal to the lowest common denominator” during an interview that aired on ITV’s “Good Morning Britain” on Tuesday. The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
