With over 80 thousand Americans dead and millions more unemployed, President Donald Trump and his allies continue to rail against the recommendations of health experts, politicizing safety and endangering even more lives.
Republican Senators didn't divert from this path on Tuesday when they questioned National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases head Dr. Anthony Fauci. A large amount of the President's supporters have turned against Dr. Fauci for his willingness to use his 50 years of infectious disease expertise to inform and occasionally correct the President.
As a result, GOP Senators like Rand Paul of Kentucky used the Senate committee hearing to rake Fauci across the coals for warning them that scaling back stay-at-home orders prematurely could worsen virus outbreaks across the United States. It wasn't long before Fox News hosts like Tucker Carlson echoed the attacks in even more explicit terms.
Devout Trump supporter and Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming, however, came to Fauci's defense.
She correctly reminded her constituents that Fauci's goal is to save lives and provide expertise. But when one supports a President that's told over 18 thousand lies, there's no room for dissent—just blind loyalty.
The President's supporters weren't happy that Cheney failed to fall in line, and they soon bedeviled her with unhinged rants.
People weren't surprised at the blind loyalty at odds with truth.
