In response to Trump's tweet, DeGeneres explains, "if you know me at all, you know I don’t pay attention to politics, but unfortunately, politics pay attention to me.”  "Which one is Eric," DeGeneres quips. "Did he kill the elephant or the cheetah? Second, what is Deep State? Is it near Dollywood? Because I’m in if it is.” "This is the craziest thing I've seen all week," she added.

“Apparently, Eric Trump thinks Twitter is trying to trick him into following liberals,” DeGeneres continued. According to the Trumps, the "Deep State" is a secret branch of the government conspiring to “undermine” the president. "That "is ridiculous, because no one has undermined Donald Trump more than Donald Trump,” DeGeneres joked. "Maybe you should follow me," she continued. "Because I post a lot of cute videos. We might not agree on politics, but I think we can both agree that this is cute.”

Degeneres wasn't the only person left confused by Trump's tweet.

Twitter users had some suggestions.

"You should follow Hillary. The exposure to intelligence might be beneficial to you," wrote one Twitter user.

Other onlookers were a bit less nuanced, going right for the jugular: "Hi Eric, I know you’re not the smart one, but Twitter’s algorithm looks at who you searched for most recently when making suggestions. It looks like you might have recently searched for a Democrat, buddy," said another.

Newsweek's Kurt Eichenwald chimed in too, never missing a beat: "Um...you dont know how twitter works do you? Yes, better to think there is some massive conspiracy of unseen cabals than to think "oh, this fell into the algorithm based on other people I follow."

He added: "No wonder they call you the dullest knife in the Trump drawer."

To be fair, Trump's supporters had their fun too:
