Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis raised eyebrows earlier this week after proposing to wear a boot on his head if former President Donald Trump agrees to join the next debate alongside other Republican presidential hopefuls.

DeSantis made the odd announcement during an interview with Newsmax's Eric Bolling after weeks of speculation surrounding DeSantis, with some suggesting he wears lifts in his boots to appear taller.

His exact words were:

“If Donald Trump can summon the balls to show up to the debate, I’ll wear a boot on my head."

Shortly afterward, DeSantis' national spokeswoman, Carly Atchison, took to social media to issue a tongue-in-cheek challenge to members of the Trump campaign that riffed off DeSantis' statement.

She wrote:

“ATTN: Team Trump ‘men,’ if you ever decide to man up, you and your boss can buy a pair of balls here."

Atchison—who tagged Trump campaign members Jason Miller, Alex Bruesewitz, and Steven Cheung—also linked to a website where golf balls with DeSantis' name can be purchased.

Cheung later jabbed that DeSantis "is so broke he needs to sell his balls to strangers in order make rent and keep the lights on."

Bruesewitz said the post is a sign the DeSantis team "finally admits that Trump has DeSantis' balls in a box. Acceptance is an important step!"

Others couldn't help but roll their eyes at the post.

The discussion regarding Ron DeSantis' footwear garnered national attention when Trump himself posted images on his Truth Social account, raising questions about the Governor's choice of boots.

DeSantis addressed the controversy earlier this week, asserting that he wears standard off-the-rack boots without lifts. Nevertheless, this assertion has only served to fan the flames of speculation and has become a subject of humor for late-night comedians.

The speculation over his choice of footwear is nothing new for DeSantis, who last year sparked a new meme after he surveyed damage caused by Hurricane Ian while wearing a rather immaculate pair of white rubber boots that looked remarkably out of place given the circumstances.
