As threats of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids and extrajudicial deportations mount, immigration officials are now detaining United States citizens.

On June 27, brothers Marlon Galicia and Francisco Erwin Galicia were stopped at a checkpoint in Texas. Marlon Galicia, from Mexico, was in the country illegally and subsequently deported. Francisco Galicia, a United States citizen, was born in Dallas.

It was nearly two years ago that chaos descended upon Charlottesville, Virginia when antifascist protestors clashed with Nazis and White Supremacists at the now-infamous Unite the Right rally. One Nazi is set to serve two life sentences in prison for driving his vehicle into a crowd of protestors, killing one and injuring others. Trump's infamous response? There were some "very fine people on both sides."

In response to the event, Stern, a top German news magazine founded in 1948, featured Trump on its cover giving the Nazi salute with an American flag draped over him.

As concerns mount over the inhumane conditions of migrant detention centers across the nation, Vice President Mike Pence visited two border facilities in McAllen, Texas on Friday.

The Vice President soon tweeted about the Donna Processing Center, a two month old tent facility, praising the center's "humane and compassionate care."

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) visited two migrant detention centers near the Texas border with other members of Congress this week.

Since touring the facilities, Ocasio-Cortez and others in her group have been vocal about the squalid conditions, with harrowing descriptions of overcrowded cells, abusive guards, and detainees told to drink from toilets.

Ever since Oregon Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley tried to visit a children's detention center in Texas, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) remains under heightened scrutiny for enforcing the Justice Department's new policy for dealing with asylum seekers and other migrants with children at the United States southern border. Jeff Sessions, Attorney General and head of the Justice Department, unveiled President Donald Trump's plan back on May 7.

If you take away children and detain them separate from their parents, you can more easily control the parents.

Everyone seems to agree that immigration policy in the U.S. is ripe for an overhaul, but there is little consensus on how to go about it.

Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, for instance, has proposed creating a path to citizenship for immigrants living in the U.S. Few conservatives, on the other hand, are willing to go that far. And though GOP leadership has acknowledged that Republicans  cannot win the White House without rethinking their approach to immigration policy, current GOP front runner, Donald Trump, continues to call for mass deportation; his now infamous inflammatory assertions that Mexican immigrants were criminals and “rapists” may have lost him a clothing line at Macy’s, but his overall support base in the party remains strong -- signaling a divide within the Republican party.
