Fans of pop icon Britney Spears rejoiced after news broke that her father, James Spears, had been immediately suspended from the conservatorship she'd been under since 2008, clearing a path to put the singer permanently back in control of her finances and work.

Ahead of the judge's ruling, Spears' lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, said:

"[James Spears] does not belong in her life, your honor, for another day. Please hear the plea of my client."

Spears' fight to end her conservatorship has been the subject of national attention, even garnering support from far-right elected officials, like Congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida, in what some have decried as exploitation.

Back in July, Gaetz showed up to a Free Britney rally, where he decried the "grifters" behind the conservatorship and said it would be a "black eye on the American justice system" if it wasn't lifted.

With the news of the conservatorship's suspension, far-right Senator Ted Cruz of Texas joined the chorus praising the development—and his hypocrisy was immediately called out by late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.

Kimmel played a clip of Cruz saying:

"The case has captured the attention of the world and I, myself, count myself emphatically in the Free Britney camp.

The host responded:

"Since when is Ted Cruz in favor of women making their own decisions? That's a new one. He is so desperate to get one celebrity to like him. I mean, forget it, Ted. Even Kirstie Alley thinks he's a dick. "

Kimmel was referring to Cruz's longtime opposition to abortion access, most recently with his support of the nation's most restrictive abortion law in his state of Texas, which bans abortions after six weeks and exposes anyone who even facilitates an illegal abortion to criminal charges.

People agreed with Kimmel on the hypocrisy of Cruz's words.

Some said Cruz was misplacing his priorities by focusing on Spears.

Spears doesn't seem to need Cruz's support.
