Seventy years ago, on August 6, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan; three days later, it dropped another on Nagasaki. Japan surrendered within a week, marking the end of the bloodiest war the world has ever known. But 70 years later, whether the United States made the right decision is still a point of bitter debate.

The human cost of the nuclear attack on Japan is almost unfathomable: approximately 200,000 people lost their lives. And yet, many continue to believe that the bombing was unavoidable.
