Former President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama tweeted touching tributes to soul legend Aretha Franklin, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 76 after battling pancreatic cancer.

"May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace."

Aretha Franklin, long considered "one of the giants" of soul music, died today at her home in Detroit, Michigan surrounded by friends and family. She was 76.

Franklin's publicist confirmed her death to the AP.

Aretha Franklin is very much alive, contrary to a certain trending item on the internet today which prompted messages from worried fans.

Earlier today, a Twitter account shared the "news" that Franklin had passed away.
