South Bend, Indiana Mayor and 2020 Democratic presidential contender Pete Buttigieg didn’t back down when asked if he believed President Donald Trump faked a disability in order to avoid serving in Vietnam.
When asked if he believed Trump should’ve served in Vietnam, Buttigieg asserted that he had a “pretty dim view of [Trump’s] decision to fake a disability” in order to avoid service. The interviewer asked for clarification: “You believe he faked a disability?”
Mayor Pete didn’t back down:
“Do you believe he has a disability? At least not that one. This is actually really important because I don’t mean to trivialize disability, but I think that’s exactly what he did.”
Buttigieg has served in Afghanistan, but Trump infamously avoided the draft to Vietnam five times due to college and then “bone spurs.” Some outlets have reported that the podiatrist’s bone spur diagnosis was done as a favor to Trump’s father, Fred Trump.
People applauded Buttigieg’s statement.
Trump wasn’t spared in the comments either.
Way to go, Mayor Pete.
And therein lies the problem.
