Lara Trump, the wife of President Donald Trump’s second-eldest son Eric, said Tuesday that the government shutdown, now into its 33rd day, is the fault of Democrats and that furloughed federal workers are making a necessary sacrifice.
In an interview with Bold TV, Mrs. Trump predicted the shutdown will last “as long as these Democrats keep playing politics” and that the president “has people of the country behind him” in the fight for his border wall.
The shutdown will last “as long as it takes these Democrats to come to the table,” Mrs. Trump told Bold TV Founder Carrie Sheffield. “It’s going to last as long as it takes for [Trump] to get his wall.”
After lamenting that Trump had to give up his Christmas vacation and forego “getting a tan” at Mar-a-Lago, Mrs. Trump had a message for government workers who are either furloughed or being forced to work for free:
“Listen, it’s not fair to you, we all get that. But this is so much bigger than any one person. It is a little bit of pain, but it’s going to be for the future of our country. And their children and grandchildren and generations after them will thank them for their sacrifice right now. I know it’s hard.”
Mrs. Trump urged workers to “please stay strong” and that “we appreciate everything you’re sacrificing.”
An enraged Twitterverse went ballistic over Mrs. Trump’s gleeful indifferece.
The Trumps have not sacrificed anything.
.@LaraLeaTrump, do you have any idea what it’s like to get bills in the mail that you can’t pay? Do you know what it’s like not to visit the doctor because you can’t afford the deductible? The amount of stress that puts on a family is huge. It’s a lot more than “a bit of a pain.” https://t.co/C6DZEI1Tpb

Weird how it has to be the working class that "sacrifices" and not the 1%.

@LaraLeaTrump Sacrifices? You mean like not being able to get insulin and dying? Like getting put out of their homes? So much bigger? What are YOU giving up? Are you feeding these people? Shut up with that you ass. He won't help CA or PR but needs a wall that won't do shit?

What are you sacrificing.

The words of someone who has sacrificed nothing. How big of you too offer up someone else’s suffering…

Says the rich kid #SMH to people who have never lived paycheck to paycheck understand this. One paycheck is a loss of rent. Then and eviction notice comes and you 30 days to move. Not to mention food. This is what happens when #Billionaires run the government #GovernmentShutdown.

The workers did not ask for this.
She's acting like they had a choice in the matter. It's more like these employees have been offered as a sacrifice for Trump's vanity project. It's stunning how out of touch the entire family is.

Yes Lara Trump:
It's a bit of a pain getting evicted, declaring bankruptcy, waiting in food bank lines to feed your kids, paying fees & interest instead of being paid, & skipping insulin or medication.
All true of federal workers who should be getting paid instead.

Former George W. Bush speechwriter David Frum pointed to a new CBS News poll showing that 71 percent of Americans do not think Trump’s fight for a border wall is worth shutting down the government.
The American people are not behind the president on this.

I'm not convinced that any trump ha the moral or experiential platform to tell other Americans that their financial pain is "worth it."

People are pissed.
