Donald Trump Just Unveiled a Bizarre New Justification for Laws Requiring Voter ID, and People Have Questions

President Donald Trump on Wednesday made a bizarre claim about voter IDs in an exclusive interview with conservative outlet The Daily Caller.

Trump, without evidence, blamed the string of recent Republican losses on "potentially illegal votes," claiming that there are people out there - somewhere - literally making rounds to the polls despite not being registered to vote.

“The Republicans don’t win and that’s because of potentially illegal votes,” Trump complained. “When people get in line that have absolutely no right to vote and they go around in circles. Sometimes they go to their car, put on a different hat, put on a different shirt, come in and vote again. Nobody takes anything. It’s really a disgrace what’s going on.”

The president then falsely claimed that voter IDs are required to by cereal.

“If you buy a box of cereal — you have a voter ID,” Trump continued. “They try to shame everybody by calling them racist, or calling them something, anything they can think of, when you say you want voter ID. But voter ID is a very important thing.”

Sound familiar?

Back in August, Trump said at a campaign rally in Florida that IDs were required to buy groceries. That, of course, is completely untrue.

“You know if you go out and you wanna buy groceries, you need a picture on a card,” the president proclaimed, hinting that the billionaire has never actually set foot in a grocery store. “You need ID.”

It didn't take long for Twitter to tear into Trump's ignorance about how both elections and groceries work.

Or that voter fraud, statistically, is exceedingly rare.

Has Trump ever set foot in a grocery store?

Doesn't seem like it.

Trump spend the rest of the Daily Caller interview lamenting the messy recount in Florida after last Tuesday's races for governor and U.S. Senate were too close to call.

Trump called on Broward County elections supervisor Brenda Snipes - whom he called a disaster - to be fired.

“You look at her past, she’s a disaster,” Trump said, “Even with me. I won Florida and — you remember? That area, Broward, didn’t come in,” Trump said of Broward County and Snipes. “You can only put in so many votes, although she may change that system.”

Trump also suggested that Snipes' competence has led to corruption, due to the vast number of ballots that needed to be counted after the polls closed.

“When they call this woman incompetent, they’re wrong,” Trump said of Snipes. “She’s very competent but in a bad way.”

After hinting that he has considered removing Snipes, Trump said the election should have ended Tuesday night, regardless of how many uncounted votes remained.

“Well, many votes were added to that, and you know what’s going on," Trump said. "And now they have mixed them up. They mixed the votes up and now you can’t find the ones that were put in, they just put ’em into a batch.”
