The season seven ending of Game of Thrones left fans anticipating the inevitable battle between the White Walkers, Cersei Lannister and her few allies, and the rest of Westeros. Then came the heart-wrenching news that the final season of D. B. Weiss and David Benioff’s acclaimed HBO production wouldn’t air until 2019.
Though there may still be plenty of time before the last season releases, leaked production images are giving fans much to be anxious about. In the season seven finale, Cersei Lannister ignored warnings of the White Walkers, instead opting to allow the undead army to wipe out all of Westeros, specifically her enemies, before dealing with the threat in King’s Landing.
Recent production images show the true heir to the Iron Throne Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Cersei (Lena Headey) filming together in Dubrovnik, Croatia. In prior seasons, Dubrovnik has been used as the hub for King’s Landing, meaning the King in the North and the Queen of Westeros may be gearing up for battle. The meeting could also be one last desperate plea from Snow for Cersei to join in the fight against the White Walkers.
These leaked images came only days after Steven McAuley revealed a video of a ‘Game of Thrones’’ set burning. The fiery scene was suspected to be Winterfell, which would be in direct line of the White Walkers’ army as it continues its march south after toppling The Wall.
Other highly anticipated moments that will fill the short final season included the reveal of Jon Snow’s true lineage and the struggle between him and newfound love Daenerys that it will cause. If Winterfell survives long enough, there can also be an expected rift between Snow and half-sister Sansa Stark for rule over the northern city, which started to blossom towards the end of the prior season.
The final season of ‘Game of Thrones’ will undoubtedly force Snow, Daenerys, and their allies to fight a war on two fronts. In a show that prides itself on killing off major characters on a whim, it’s bound to be a stress-filled six episodes.
Though the eighth season marks the end of this era of Game of Thrones, four spin-off shows are in consideration for production in the future.
