On Feb. 24, 2018, Bollywood film producer Boney Kapoor suffered the loss of his wife, Sridevi Kapoor, when she accidentally drowned in a hotel bathtub. The 62-year-old widower and father of four spoke out about his wife’s death, writing:

“To the world, she was their Chandni, the actor par excellence, their Sridevi, but to me, she was my love, my friend, mother to our girls, my partner. To our daughters, she was their everything, their life. She was the axis around which our family ran.”

While it is true that Sridevi’s career was one of the more prolific in the Bollywood circuit, Boney Kapoor also garnered his own success through his years as a film producer. In 1980, along with then-wife Surinder Kapoor, he produced his first movie, Hum Paanch. Seven years later, he solo-produced his most successful film to date, Mr. India. Indian news outlet Rediff.com regarded Mr. India, which starred future wife Sridevi, as “one of the most iconic films of its time.” Though there were no award ceremonies in 1987 or 1988 that Mr. India could be awarded for, Sridevi was given the 2013 Filmfare Special Award for her performance.

A sequel to Mr. India has been in the planning stages since 2012, with Kapoor returning as producer and Sridevi slated to reprise her role as Seema Soni. In a statement about Sridevi's death, Mr. India director Shekhar Kapur said: "[T]hat film should have been made by now." No further statement on the film's status has been made.

Since producing Hum Paanch, Kapoor’s net worth has undoubtedly increased. At the time of Sridevi’s death, the two had an alleged combined net worth of $35 million, or 228,2525,000 Indian rupees. The last film Kapoor and Sridevi worked on, the award-winning Mom, earned an approximate $9.8 million at the box office. MSN reported that the Bollywood power couple owned a line of luxury cars, including Porsche, Ford and Audi and were known for their frequent travels.
