Senate and House Democratic Leaders announced late Wednesday night that they had reached a deal with President Trump to protect “Dreamers” from deportation, after he had previously begun the dismantling of the Obama era DACA program earlier this month. The agreement was reportedly made in exchange for enhanced border security, but specifically not including any funding for his long-sought border wall.

The announcement came from Senator Charles Schumer and Representative Nancy Pelosi following a White House dinner that Republican lawmakers were not invited to, which is the second time in two weeks that Trump has cut out Republicans to reach a deal with Democratic leaders. Conservative blowback immediately followed the announcement, and now as of this morning Trump is denying any deal had been made.

First, Schumer and Pelosi released a joint statement yesterday evening that an agreement had been reached with the President to protect DACA immigrants:

"We agreed to enshrine the protections of Daca into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that's acceptable to both sides."

Following this, conservatives such as House Representative Stephen King of Iowa took Trump to task over the breaking news, on the social media platform that has become the norm of political discourse with the current administration:

In addition, Fox News host Sean Hannity demanded that his president stay the course and not trust Democratic leaders, and then blamed Republican leaders for letting such a deal happen.

Steve Bannon, once Trump’s right-hand man and chief strategist, now ousted from the White House, attacked the president on his right-wing website Breitbart with the headline “Amnesty Don,” accusing Trump of caving to the enemy.

The nature and understanding of the deal began to change yesterday evening, following the announcement and initial blowback. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders denied that exclusion of the Trump’s border wall was discussed, though she did confirm that both DACA and border security were discussed.

Then in the early hours of this morning, Trump denied that any deal has been made. He neglected to acknowledge his disgruntled and “blown up” base.

He then immediately followed that tweet with two others, claiming to be in support of the nearly 800,000 immigrant Dreamers brought illegally to the United States as children, whom his actions threaten to deport. He even mentioned the increased border security that Schumer and Pelosi had announced the previous evening.

He then changed the subject by announcing that he was headed to Florida to survey the damage and recovery in the wake of Hurricane Irma, perhaps again from a distance.
